Archery Range Rules

proposed

   Archery Range:
The Windham-Gorham Rod and Gun Club has activated a Members and Guests-only outdoor archery range adjacent to the Club parking area capable of handling traditional, recurve, crossbow, and compound bow shooting. The following rules are intended to keep the archery shooting activities safe:

   - Before commencing shooting, ensure the area surrounding and immediately behind the target batts is clear of people, especially children, who may be trespassing on Club leased property. Make sure the carpet backstop is in place behind the 3-D deer target. Conventional paper targets may be added to the standard target batt with push pins or thumb tacks

   - Make sure your equipment is properly rigged, sighted in, and compatible with the range. Use only fully fletched arrows of the correct length, weight, and spine for the bow in use. Luminescent knocks are acceptable. Only field points and target points are permitted on the range for either the life-sized 3-D deer target or standard target batt. Broadheads, even practice broadheads, are not to be used on this range.

   - Only two (2) archers are to use the range at the same time and must shoot at the same distance from the targets. There are round cement markers in the ground for archers to shoot at known distances of 20 and 30 yards from the targets. Any observers should remain behind the archers at whatever range the archers choose to shoot. Archers should confine themselves to a distance from the targets where they can consistently group all their arrows before attempting to shoot at a longer range. The archers should coordinate with each other and all observers as to when the range is ‘cold’ before anyone proceeds down range to check targets and retrieve arrows.

   - Errant shots. Any arrows that miss the intended targets and the respective backstops (or that completely penetrate the backstops) must be accounted for before resuming shooting. Any arrows that lodge in the wooden parts of the target supports or the legs of the life-sized 3-D deer target may be extremely difficult to remove. Consider using a removal aid or unscrewing the arrow tip from the shaft, leaving the tip in the wood/plastic and simply replacing it with a spare point.

Questions regarding the archery range should be directed to Bob Chapin, 571 217-1700 or 207 655-1028.
